Playground

Welcome to our 2017 Playground Fundraiser.

For five years, Sweet Tea Shakespeare has provided magical, wonderful indoor and outdoor plays by Shakespeare and other classic writers, as well as new adaptations by local writers. As our friends know, STS is an organization that calls all of Fayetteville and the surrounding region “home” as we travel to a number of venues in the region, from the 1897 Poe House on the grounds of the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex to Holy Trinity Episcopal and St. Michael’s Maronite Catholic Churches to The Capitol Encore Academy to Cape Fear Botanical Garden and to a host of regional craft breweries and pop-up venues.

We’ve begun to master what it means to take over a space and make it feel like our plays are old friends, meeting in a living room or on a back patio, sharing an ice cold beverage and some good food, laughing and talking over great music and good stories.

After 5 years, it’s time to take the next step in making a home for plays at Sweet Tea Shakespeare. To that end, we’re launching our Playground Fundraiser, an initiative meant to raise funds for three new centerpieces of the STS experience.

Playhouse

First is our new, traveling Playhouse. Designed by Steve Wood, this Playhouse is a modular frons scenae structure meant to approximate Shakespeare’s own playhouses, with two entrances and a central “discovery space.” Steve’s design is also flexible, allowing for the playhouse to be configured in several ways, depending on the needs of the production. The playhouse will serve as a backdrop for many of our plays in 2017 and beyond, and has been designed with steel and wood in a way that will last for years to come.

The Playhouse will debut in September during King Lear, a production we’re co-producing with Honest Pint Theatre Company in Raleigh. We are actively seeking sponsorships for the Playhouse now to cover the following expenses:

  • $1500 | design and construction fees
  • $2250 | steel, wood, hardware, and other supplies
  • $750 | paint application and materials

Sponsorships in any amount can be made via cash, check, or credit card by contacting gift@sweetteashakespeare.com or by making a monthly pledge to our house band, the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers, on Patreon.

The Sponsorship with the highest monetary value by closing night of King Lear, or at the conclusion of this phase of the campaign, will receive naming rights to the Playhouse. All sponsors giving $250 or more will have their names etched into the playhouse backstage area as a signifier of their commitment to making Sweet Tea Shakespeare a home for years to come.

Short-grassed Green

Second is our Short-grassed Green. A substantial piece of the highest quality artificial turf, this patch of grass will help us bring outdoors in, regardless of performance location.

Also debuting in our September production of King Lear, we’re seeking sponsorships for the Short-grassed Green to cover the following expenses:

  • $1200 | grass order
  • $250 | shipping
  • $800 | industrial sewing and backing

Sponsorships in any amount can be made via cash, check, or credit card by contacting gift@sweetteashakespeare.com or by making a monthly pledge to our house band, the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers, on Patreon.

Play Clothes

Third are our Play Clothes. A commissioned stock of custom-made costumes for a company of fifteen actors and musicians, this closet of Play Clothes will serve as the backbone of our signature look for many years.

Featuring custom dyes and rich designs, these costumes will debut during our affectionately titled “SeaWorld Rep” in June 2018, which features productions of The Tempest and Pericles, Prince of Tyre. We’re seeking sponsorships for our Play Clothes as follows:

  • $3750 | 15 custom-made costume ensembles for actors and musicians

Sponsorships in any amount can be made via cash, check, or credit card by contacting gift@sweetteashakespeare.com or by making a monthly pledge to our house band, the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers, on Patreon.
