Auditions for Bottom’s Dream

Sweet Tea Shakespeare will host auditions for Bottom’s Dream, its experimental spring production, on January 24, 25, and 26.

Registration for auditions is required IN ADVANCE. Location and time of audition details will be provided after registration.

The production dates are March 27-29 with rehearsals for the three full weeks prior to opening during evenings (6-10pm, generally) and on weekends (all day potential). The performance will take place OUTDOORS at the 1897 Poe House and adjacent areas on the grounds of the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex. We will hold readthroughs and generative workshops 2-3 times in February.

Bottom’s Dream is a new, experiential, experimental, written and improvised work based on A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Some of Shakespeare’s text will be combined with new work and improvised work as well. Actors will work with the creative staff on a partially scripted, partially improvised performance of 90-120 minutes. The final performance will be promenade style (audience follows actors around an open space), outdoors, and with a meal.

We are particularly interested in actors with musical (singing, playing, or arranging) abilities as well as performers with skills in the following areas:

-dance
-juggling
-flame throwing
-twirling
-aerials
-other circus-oriented skills
-tumbling

We seek actors for the following roles:

Lysander (male), in love with Hermia
Helena (female), in love with Demetrius
Demetrius (male), in love with Hermia
Theseus, (m or f) Duke of Athens
Hippolyta (female), queen of the Amazons
Egeus (m or f), father of Hermia
Philostrate (m or f), master of the revels to Theseus
Nick Bottom (m or f), a weaver
Peter Quince (m or f), a carpenter
Francis Flute (m or f), a bellows-mender
Tom Snout (m or f), a tinker
Snug (m or f), a joiner
Robin Starveling (m or f), a tailor
Oberon (male) king of the fairies
Titania (female), queen of the fairies
Puck, also known as Robin Goodfellow (m or f), a fairy in service to Oberon
Fairy (m or f), in service to Titania
Peaseblossom (male or female), a fairy attending upon Titania
Cobweb (male or female), a fairy attending upon Titania
Moth (male or female), a fairy attending upon Titania
Mustardseed (male or female), a fairy attending upon Titania
Lords, Ladies, and Attendants on Theseus and Hippolyta
Other fairies in the trains of Titania and Oberon

AUDITIONS WILL BE COMPRISED of cold readings, improvisational work, and group exercises.
